Sam Briggs is taking full responsibility for the penalty she received after CrossFit added 2:30 to her time on 20.1. Briggs was one of 26 athletes who were penalized, but just one of seven who received major penalties.
Briggs received penalties for both single-leg jumps on the burpees and lack of extension on ground-to-overhead.
In an Instagram post late Thursday, Briggs said that it was on her to meet the standards. With the penalty, Briggs will not be able to qualify directly to the CrossFit Games. Instead, she will need to earn an invite via one of the Sanctionals. “This just means I’ll be bringing the fire to the sanctioned events where I’ll be fighting for my ticket to The Games,” commented Briggs.
Briggs did, however, say that she will continue to do the final three Open workouts.
Briggs’ full statement is below:
“I take full responsibility for CrossFit’s penalty
It was on me to ensure that the standards were clearly met
This ultimately means me qualifying through the open this year is near impossible but I’ll still put my self through the remaining 3 workouts along with you guys
This just means I’ll be bringing the fire to the sanctioned events where I’ll be fighting for my ticket to The Games

P.S. I predict a chipper for tonight’s open workout!”
