Sean Sweeney says he hasn’t repeated an Open workout since 2015, the first year he made CrossFit Regionals as an individual competitor.
“Since 2015 I have always gave the workout my best on the first shot then moved on,” Sweeney said on his social media outlets. “20.1 was no different. I gave it everything I had on my first attempt and did not redo it.”
While the majority of top-tier CrossFit athletes spent the weekend strategizing and agonizing over how the second or third attempt might go on the burner couplet, Sweeney said he took the redo time and simply got in a solid day of training.
“Chatting with my coach @anarchostrainingmethods we have decided that I will only redo if I finish a workout and feel like I can make some positive changes to the game plan and approach to improve my score,” Sweeney said.
The “CrossFit Cowboy” kicked up dust in the 2019 season by punching his ticket to Madison before the Open began. Sweeney won the CrossFit Fittest in Cape Town competition and went on to finish 24th at the Games in his third appearance.
“I have a feeling this year I will finally get the ‘Joy’ of redoing an open workout since I would like to qualify thru the open this year,” Sweeney said.
The Cowboy finished in 53rd place on the worldwide leaderboard after 20.1 with a 9:07 time. He’s got some work to do over the next four weeks to qualify in one of the coveted top 20 spots.
