CrossFit has announced that Shawn Ramirez failed an in-competition drug test while competing at the 2024 Masters CrossFit Games over Labor Day weekend. Ramirez was competing in the Men’s 50-54 year-old division. However, the drug test sample he submitted contained dihydroxy-LGD-4033, a metabolite of LGD-4033.
Ramirez is the second athlete in the men’s 50-54 year-old age group division at the 2024 Masters CrossFit Games to fail a drug test. Jamie McGarva’s sample tested positive for metabolites of GW501516. McGarva’s second place finish was invalidated after he received a 4-year sanction from CrossFit.
Originally, Ramirez was 3rd on the leaderboard. But after McGarva’s sanction Ramirez was bumped up to 2nd place. Now, with Ramirez’s failed sample that is in jeopardy pending his appeal of his test results.
If Ramirez’s appeal is denied, Joel Hughes, who was originally in 4th place will move up to 2nd place and Jason Leeves will move up from 5th place into 3rd place.
This is not the first time Shawn Ramirez has failed a drug test. Back in 2018, Ramirez tested positive for metabolites of GW501516. Ramirez had finished in 2nd place in the 40-44 year-old Masters division at the 2018 CrossFit Games.
At the time Ramirez claimed contamination of his supplements. In an Instagram post to address the situation in 2018, Ramirez said, “For those of you that know me, the character driven man I am, father, husband and LOYAL friend, this is for you. You know me well enough that I would NEVER take anything to jeopardize everything I worked so hard to achieve these last 5 years.”
He continued, “The amounts they found were so small 0.02 ng/ml (20 trillionths of a gram) and 0.3ng/ml, which were provided by CrossFit upon request. The only thing that makes any sense is that there was a contaminated substance that I was taking.”
Ramirez said he was going to have his supplements tested, but Ramirez ultimately received a 4-year sanction in 2018. That sanction expired in September 2022.
This year was Ramirez’s first time returning to the CrossFit Games following his suspension. Now, he faces a similar situation as he did six years ago.
