CrossFit has announced that Jamie McGarva and Dayana Vicentelli have received 4-year sanctions after both athletes violated the CrossFit Games Drug Testing Policy.
Jamie McGarva provided a sample that tested positive for metabolites of GW501516 during an in-competition drug test at the 2024 Masters CrossFit Games. McGarva, 50, finished in 2nd place overall in the men’s 50-54 age group division.
It was McGarva’s first time competing at the CrossFit Games. However, with the failed drug test, his second place finish will be forfeited. Shawn Ramirez, who returned to competition following a failed drug test in 2018, will now take 2nd place and Joel Hughes will now be in 3rd place overall.
McGarva’s 4-year sanction begins retroactively to September 1, 2024, and will run through September 1, 2028.
We reported last month that Dayana Vicentelli had failed an in-competition drug test while competed at the FITLAND Fitness Festival in Colombia. At the time, however, the results of the drug test were published by the FITLAND organizers and submitted to CrossFit HQ.
Today, CrossFit officially sanctioned Vicentelli for violating the CrossFit Games Drug Testing Policy. Her sample contained metabolites of GW501516.
Section 11 of the 2024 CrossFit Games Drug Testing Policy states that CrossFit “may…recognize drug-policy violations, including positive tests, reported by other national anti-doping organizations.” The drug policy continues, “Once a final decision in the case has been announced by the testing agency or sports governing body, CrossFit, LLC, will, in each case, determine its own sanction for the athlete involved.”
As a result, CrossFit has sanctioned Vicentelli four years from August 19, 2024, to August 19, 2028.
Earlier this year Marcha van Glaanen Weygel received a 4-year sanction after failing a drug test while competing at an International Masters Weightlifting Association competition.
