The 2020 CrossFit Open Begins Today

The 2020 CrossFit Games season officially kicks off tonight with the live announcement of 20.1 of the CrossFit Open. The Rogue Invitational and CrossFit French Throwdown will announce the first workout of the 2020 CrossFit Open tonight at 5pm Pacific Time.

For the past nine years, the CrossFit Open has begun in February. This year, the 10th year of the CrossFit Open, begins in October.

The CrossFit Open has moved up several months to accommodate the CrossFit Games and Sanctionals format that was put into place last year. The five-week Open will be used to find National Champions and the next “Top 20” athletes to qualify directly to the CrossFit Games in August 2020.

The CrossFit Open will also be used as the online qualifier for 12 Sanctionals (shown below). Athletes looking to earn an invite to the CrossFit Games can compete at one of 28 Sanctionals throughout the season. The first step is to qualify for the Sanctionals via the Open or alternate online qualifier.

Sanctionals using CrossFit Open as online qualifier:

  • Pandaland CrossFit Challenge
  • Dubai CrossFit Championship
  • CrossFit Strength in Depth
  • Norwegian CrossFit Championship
  • Australian CrossFit Championship
  • Brazil CrossFit Championships
  • Reykjavik CrossFit Championship
  • West Coast CrossFit Classic
  • Madrid CrossFit Championship
  • Down Under CrossFit Championship
  • Ashbury Park Summer Games
  • Mayan CrossFit Classic

In 2019, 257 athletes qualified for the CrossFit Games, many of which were rookies via the National Championship qualification.

But while trying to advance to the CrossFit Games applies to the top 1% of athletes registering for the CrossFit Open, the rest of us use the Open to test ourselves year after year to see how we are improving. The Open provides many CrossFit gyms around the world to come together for five weeks and build their community.

Don’t let the 2020 CrossFit Open slip away, register today and be part of the worldwide community.
