Travis Mayer has competed in every CrossFit Open since it began in 2011. But that is changing this year as he is the latest Games veteran to be sitting out the 2023 CrossFit Games season. Mayer, who made his first appearance at the 2013 CrossFit Games, shared that he has been dealing with a hand injury since Wodapalooza last month.
Mayer injured his hand in the final event of the team competition at Wodapalooza. The two-part final event called The Kitchen Sync threw a bunch of movements at the athletes including toes-to-bar, box jump overs, heavy wall balls and handstand walks in Part A. Then in Part B, the athletes had to do dumbbell snatches, Assault Bike and burpees.
Since Wodapalooza, Mayer’s hand has been unable to support his own bodyweight. He’s been staying off his hand and working with his PT to help the healing process, but unfortunately it hasn’t healed in time for the Open.
It will be the first time Mayer has not done the Open since it began in 2011 and it will be the first time he will not compete at the CrossFit Games since 2015.
Last year, Mayer finished 18th overall at the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games. He is currently ranked 15th in the CrossFit worldwide rankings. Based in Georgia, Mayer would have been competing in the new North America East region.
Other notable names who will not be competing this year include Tia-Clair Toomey, Kara Saunders, Haley Adams and Lucy Campbell.
