Who’s in Jeopardy Heading into Day 2

Day 1 of the 2019 CrossFit Games had two events for the individual competition along with two cuts. The men’s and women’s fields were both over 130 athletes, but now heading into Day 2 there are just 50 men and 50 women still standing.

Tomorrow morning the athletes are required to check-in by 7:30am, but their first event is not until 11:00am in North Park. Like Thursday, no one knows the events yet for Friday.

The only thing we do know is that there are still four cuts remaining…we just don’t know when those will happen.

Our guess is that we will see cuts to the field very soon, possibly again after the next event, Event 3. If that’s the case, the athletes who are in 41st to 50th place are in jeopardy of ending their Games weekend early. Let’s take a look at who needs a home run performance tomorrow.

Men

The biggest name who needs a great Event 3 is Willy Georges. We talked with Georges Thursday evening and he said both events included events he does not favor. From the rope climbs to the rower, Georges said he was happy to be done with Day 1 and is looking to make a move on Day 2.

After Georges, the list in jeopardy all consist of CrossFit Games rookies. Sanctional winners Nick Bloch (Granite Games), John-Paul Hethcock (Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge) and Matt McLeod (Down Under CrossFit Championship) are all between 41st and 50th.

Women

For the women, the only Games veteran is Cheryl Nasso (2011). After that, all of the athletes are, like the men, Games rookies.

Some notable names in that range are Rachel Garibay (43rd), McKenzie Flinchum (46th) and Hanna Karlsson (48th). These athletes along with the rest will need to chase down Jacqueline Dahlstrom, who currently sits in 40th place.
