Meet Georgia Pryer. Most of you probably don’t know Georgia…yet. The 23-year-old from Australia has been competing in the CrossFit Open since 2018 and finished 22nd at the Asia CrossFit Championship Sanction event in 2019. Over the years Georgia, a former gymnast, has steadily been climbing up the leaderboard.
Last year, Georgia qualified for Semifinals where she placed 10th at Torian Pro. She followed that up with a 5th place finish at the Down Under Championship this off-season. This season, Georgia is looking to improve upon last year and it appears she is doing just that. Georgia finished 5th in the Oceania Quarterfinals and will be heading to the Torian Pro for the second consecutive year.
We caught up with Georgia after Quarterfinals to learn more about her since we think we might see her in the mix for a Games spot…
When and how did you find CrossFit?
I found CrossFit at the end of 2017 once I retired from Gymnastics.
What was your athletic background prior to CrossFit?
Prior to CrossFit I was a gymnast for 11 years. It takes a lot of time and commitment so I didn’t have room for anything else outside of school hours, but during school I really enjoyed athletics!
You’ve been competing since 2019 when you took 22nd at the Asia CrossFit Championship. What were some of the keys to consistently moving up the leaderboard over the years?
I look back at the Asia CrossFit champs and I realize how much I have learned since, about myself, about CrossFit, training and competing. I think consistency has paid off over the years and finding myself some great mentors and training partners to learn from over the years has been the biggest contributor to my improvement!
What did the past off-season look like for you? What were you focusing on to get ready for 2023?
The past off-season has been a little short with the extra prep for the Down Under Championship. However I’ve focused on my weaknesses a little extra as best I can so for me strength has been a priority in my training, I have also been working extra hard on nailing my nutrition. You can’t do one without the other, it has had massive impacts on my performance and recovery and its a breath of fresh air knowing you’re in the right hands with something so important!
How do you feel the Open and Quarterfinals have gone so far?
The Open went well for me its a great time of year to see where you stack up against your region/worldwide and gives you some extra space and time to consider if your performance should be better. The Quarterfinals are a great weekend of tests. The hidden leaderboard forces you to be confident in your performance and trusting the process knowing the work you have done will be enough!
You finished 5th in Oceania in the Quarterfinals. What will training look like leading up to Semifinals?
Leading up to Semifinals, training starts to ramp up and I’m so excited. HWPO is a new program for me this season and I can’t wait to see where it lands me. The focus is still prioritizing my weaknesses for next month or so but as Torian creeps closer its pedal to the metal, after my first taste last year I cant wait to get back to Pat Rafter Arena, it’s a totally epic weekend!
Do you have any specific goals for Torian Pro?
My goal for Torian this year is to be better than last year, so for me that’s to place higher than 10th but I will really be pushing hard for top 5, I’m keen to take a few more risks on the comp floor!
Who is your support team within CrossFit?
My support team is the best. I have my family and my partner who encourage me everyday and always support me through every little step, every Qualifier, every comp, every Personal Record. I have my gym community and staff at ‘Snake Athletic’ who show up everyday to be the best version of themselves which in turn encourages me to do my best and makes me feel supported that I have so many people who can relate to what I do everyday! I also have my training crew that provide me with friendly competition while doubling as a gnarly cheer squad. I would say my biggest coach and mentor over the years has always been Jake (Douglas) while now we have transitioned to being training buddies, I am still being taught by him in every fashion to do with physical, mental and emotional aspects of this sport I am very lucky to have the kind of leader who wears all the hats!
What do you enjoy to do outside of the gym?
Outside of the gym I love spending time outdoors in the sun, preferably by the beach with good company!
