Inside the September CAC Meeting: 2027 Season Updates

The CrossFit Athlete Council (CAC) met with members from CrossFit HQ last week for its September meeting. As mentioned in his recent Week in Review, Dave Castro was not in attendance.

This month’s meeting covered 2027 medical eligibility requirements, an update to the 2027 CrossFit Games season, CAC term limits and CEU’s for judging and volunteering.

2027 Medical Eligibility Requirements

In 2026, CrossFit implemented medical screenings form for individuals and teams competing at the CrossFit Games. Wendy Guthrie, CrossFit’s Head of Safety, shared how the medical eligibility requirement might change in 2027.

Details on these changes were not disclosed in the CAC meeting minutes, but any implemented changes will be published in the 2027 CrossFit Games rulebook, which is expected to be released in December.

2027 CrossFit Games Season Updates

Adrian Bozman shared several changes to next year. First, all online Semifinals will be AFTER the end of the in-person Semifinals. Seems like an obvious change…

If you recall, in 2025 the individual online Semifinals was right after the Mayhem Classic. Then, when all the top athletes qualified via online it left the remaining in-person Semifinals (sorry, in 2025 it was called an In-Person Qualifying Event) with non-elite fields.

They fixed it for individuals in 2026, but the Masters online Semifinals were in the middle of the season last year. Now they are fixing it in 2027 for them. Baby steps…

Bozman also said the qualifying spot distribution will be simplified. I’m not even sure what he means by this. Last year it was pretty simple.

Also, per one of the CAC recommendations, CrossFit is evaluating whether or not to increase the individual field back to 40 athletes. After years of a 40-athlete field, CrossFit shrunk the individual field down to just 30 men and 30 women for the 2025 CrossFit Games in Albany, New York. The 30-athlete field remained in 2026.

The rationale by Dave Castro was that he had more flexibility in scheduling and programming with less heats.

And finally, Bozman said that CrossFit is planning on hosting “community events” outside the in-person Semifinals. I’m not even sure what the in-person Semifinals has to do with community events, but I’ve been told by a source close to the planning that this will be some sort of pairs competition.

Council Term Limits

Other than Seth Page and Angelo DiCicco, all CAC members will have to notify their intent to run for election by October 1. Members of the CAC have the ability to serve two consecutive terms.

CrossFit will also accept applications in December from eligible candidates.

More information on all of this will be released by CrossFit HQ in November.

CEUs for Judging/Volunteering

The CAC proposed CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for volunteering at CrossFit licensed events. It sounds like HQ wasn’t thrilled with this recommendation and said volunteer judges can count those hours towards coaching hour requirements, but CEUs will not be available.
