James Newbury Completes IRONMAN Triathlon Five Weeks After Bike Accident

Just five weeks after fracturing his T-Spine 2 & 3 processes and 7+8th rib and a gash in the left lung, James Newbury completed an IRONMAN. Yes, you read that correctly! Newbury was in the hospital 35 days ago and over the weekend crossed the finish line of the IRONMAN Western Australia.

On Sunday, Newbury finished the IRONMAN in 10 hours, 14 minutes and 42 seconds. He finished 162nd overall out of 1,169 athletes. Newbury excelled on the bike where he started in 158th place and moved up to 125th by the end of the 180km ride.

Newbury would give back those positions on the run, which could be expected given his inability to fully train over the past month.

Wykie Etsebeth captured Newbury’s journey from his initial bike crash and injury to the finishline. Etsebeth will be releasing the video on December 24. Check out a preview below.

Here is a look at Newbury’s splits:

  Time Place Cumulative Time

The race also featured some exciting moments at the front of the pack. Great Britain’s Alistair Brownlee set a course record with a time of 7:45:21. Brownlee is the current two-time defending champion at the Olympics, winning gold at the 2012 and 2016 in the triathlon.

On the women’s side, Theresa Adam also set a course record with a time of 8:38:42. That was fast enough to take 11th among both men and women.
