James Scharnick, Certus CrossFit Coach, Suffers Spinal Cord Injury During Mountain Bike Accident

James Scharnick has his CrossFit L2 trainer certification and is a Manager and Trainer at Certus CrossFit in Clovis, California. This past week, however, he has been recovering from a spinal cord injury he suffered during a mountain biking accident on Father’s Day weekend.

On June 19, James was mountain biking in Big Bear with several friends when he hit a patch of sand and flipped over the handle bars. He was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he would undergo emergency surgery to fuse his cervical spine (C3-C7).

James is currently in the ICU recovering from the surgery. He is slowly regaining feeling in his limbs and getting more control of his left arm. He also has some movement in his feet which has been improving over the past few days. James has a long road to recovery, but he is determined to walk again.

A fellow Certus CrossFit gym member has set up a GoFundMe for James and his family to help cover medical bills, travel expenses and lodging for his wife and two kids to visit him in Loma Linda. So far the fundraiser has raised over $37,000 towards the $50,000 goal.

James shared a video on his Instagram a couple days ago giving an update on his situation.
