Sheila Barden has competed at the CrossFit Games as an individual and also on a team. Last year following the CrossFit Games, Barden underwent microendoscopic discectomy on her L5/S1.
In the year since her surgery, Barden is still dealing with pain. In an Instagram post, Barden shared where she is at 365 days post-op.
“365 Days. It’s been an entire year. I’m not the same. Pain is still constant. My calf and foot are still completely numb. Nerve pain is more frequent than I’d like to admit. Lifting is impossible. Running is painful.
“But still, it could be worse.
“I can bike and I can muscle-up and I can bench press. I can walk the dogs without limping. Slowly, day by day, little pieces of me are given back like raindrops, infrequent and unpredictable.
“It’ll get better, it always does.”

Microendoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed in order to relieve pain caused by a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root. Microdiscectomy is one of the most common back surgeries.
