The CrossFit Open 13.5 workout might be one of the nastiest workouts for the elite athletes. The gated workout paired thrusters and chest-to-bar pull-ups that forced athletes to do a certain amount of work to gain an extra four minutes to time…to do more thrusters and chest-to-bar pull-ups. This past week George Sterner and Rebekah Devine did 13.5 in their CrossFit affiliate.
13.5 was…
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 4 minutes of:
100 pound Thruster, 15 reps
15 Chest to bar Pull-ups
If 90 reps (3 rounds) are completed in under 4 minutes, time extends to 8 minutes.
If 180 reps (6 rounds) are completed in under 8 minutes, time extends to 12 minutes.
If 270 reps (9 rounds) are completed in under 12 minutes, time extends to 16 minutes.
Etc.
The 13.5 Open announcement featured Sam Briggs vs Camille Leblanc-Bazinet and Rich Froning vs Jason Khalipa. The Open announcement is widely considered one of the best of all time.
Rich Froning would end up moving into the third gated segment, accumulating 226 reps while Khalipa was capped at 8:00, finishing with only 169 reps.
Earlier this week, George Sterner and Rebekah Devine took on 13.5 as part of their CrossFit affiliate workout. The two are in the foreground surrounded by members in their gym, also doing the workout.
Sterner ends up with 250 reps while Devine accumulated 221 reps.
Looking back at the 2013 CrossFit Open leaderboard. Sterner’s 250 reps would have put him 2nd in the world, only behind Josh Bridges with 254 reps.
Devine would have had the 6th best score as only five women in 2013 made it past the 8-minute mark.
