Why Are People So Angry About Sydney Sweeney’s NOVIG Ad?

My Instagram feed today consists of two things…the HYROX poo controversy (which I helped fuel) and women outraged at Sydney Sweeney’s latest ad campaign.

For those unaware, Sydney Sweeney is the face of NOVIG’s latest ad campaign. I had never heard of NOVIG until the past week when it hit my feed on X.

For those uninitiated, it’s basically Sweeney naked and barely covered by various sporting equipment. NOVIG is a new? sports prediction/betting platform. But according to the ad it’s only for sports. “No betting on wars or deaths and no politics,” quips Sweeney.

As I have never net on sports, I saw the ad, thought it was a bold way for NOVIG to get noticed and then I moved on. Didn’t really give it much thought after that.

Then, today, my feed blew up of women angry at Sydney Sweeney. All of these posts centered around what real women’s sports are.

I could go on and on. Trust me, these posts are everywhere.

I’m struggling to see the connection between Sweeney trying to get men’s attention to use a new sports betting platform and the what real women’s sports are. Everyone knows Sweeney isn’t an athlete. She wasn’t saying that she represents women’s sports.

It’s literally a way to get eyeballs on a sports betting platform.

And it’s working. And the criticism is only fueling the interest in the ad.
