We are in the midst of the 2017 CrossFit Regionals, but there is already talk about the 2018 season. In an interview with Reebok this past weekend, Dave Castro talked about programming for the three stages of the CrossFit Games season and what it has been like to see the sport grow over the past 11 years.
What might be the most interesting comment though is a one-liner in the middle of talking about his Regional travel schedule this year. Castro will be traveling to all of the North American Regionals over the three weekends. Castro added, “Next year, I don’t know what I’m going to do, though, because I’m not sure the Regionals format will look the same. That’s all I’m going to say about that for now.”
The Regional format changed a few years ago in 2015 when the regions combined to form Super Regionals. In addition to changing the competition within each Regional, the number of advancing to each stage was reduced. So what could those changes entail?
There have been calls by fans to do all of the Regionals on the same weekend and to advance the top 40 athletes in the world rather than giving five spots to each Regional. Another possibility is restructuring the Regional maps to better reflect the growing international community.
Whatever it is, Castro will be sure to keep us guessing.
