It looks like another “unofficial” Open winner has been penalized reps after video review. Travis Mayer was declared the Men’s worldwide winner of 17.4 on the CrossFit Games show on Tuesday, but after video review, CrossFit has assessed a five-rep penalty to Mayer’s score of 329 reps. CrossFit has not released a statement on why the penalty was assessed.

The penalty moves Mayer down to 3rd worldwide and had no impact to his regional standings. Fraser is now the official 17.4 winner after all is said and done.
The penalties following video review is not unprecedented. Three athletes on 17.1 were penalized opening the door for Scott Cottrill to take the #1 spot worldwide.

Fraser used a GoPro lens which has a fisheye effect, which CrossFit’s video submission standards state, “Videos shot with a fisheye lens or similar lens may be rejected due to the visual distortion these lenses cause.” This is a similar lens that Josh Bridges used last year and was penalized for not completing full reps on the deadlifts.
