John Young and Tyler Watkins said Lucy McGonigle was the 4th best “Future Phenom” while playing Blind Rankings. Sure, they had no idea who they were ranking, but John then doubled down by saying, “if you’re just there at Semifinals, then I don’t think it’s going to happen for you.”
Let’s just say Lucy saw that and didn’t agree (31:44).
Lucy competed all four years that she was eligible in the teenage division where she won twice – once when she was 15 and then again the following year in the 16-17 year-old division. This past season she took 3rd in the 16-17 teenage girls division.
And like John mentioned, she has competed at the elite Semifinals the past two seasons. In 2023 she finished 44th overall and in 2024 she took 19th, both at the Europe Semifinal.
Ok, as for the rest of the video, something I learned is that Lucy apparently takes after Mikko Salo and does her training in a dungeon closet (0:35).
Lucy started CrossFit about eight years ago when she was just nine. Within a couple years she showed that she was able to hang with girls who were several years older than her. Since then she has continued to train because she just loves CrossFit.
