In another twist in the saga that is the Rogue Invitational’s online qualifier, the leaderboard has changed once again. The online qualifier has been plagued by numerous video submission rejections which has caused the leaderboard to be in constant flux.
Many of the athletes who had scores missing this morning have had them added back to the leaderboard. On the women’s side, Manon Angonese is back in the top 5 and has actually moved into 1st overall. Andrea Solberg has also moved back into a qualifying spot.
While we don’t have information on all of the changes. We do know that Angonese, Solberg and Matilde Garnes’ scores were reinstated following an appeal after their scores were invalidated last night. The athletes, all from Euriope, used kilogram bumper plates in Workout 1. The athletes all used 29kg for the barbell weight used in the thrusters and front rack box step-ups.
The problem is that the original movement standards (full document here) published did not include a conversion for those using kilogram bumper plates. Below is a screenshot of the original Workout 1 movement standards:
It is unclear when Rogue made the change, but at some point after originally publishing the movement standards, Rogue published an updated document to include a kilogram conversion (full updated document here). A screenshot of the revised standards are below:
It appears Rogue did not notify the athletes that a change had been made to the standards following the initial publication. The problem is that the athletes ended up using 29kg as the conversion for the 65-pound barbell. That conversion has generally been the standard in international competitions, including the 2022 CrossFit Open.
A look at the Open Week 3 workout of the 2022 CrossFit Open shows that 29kg should be used in lieu of a 65-pound barbell. See below:
According to one of the athletes we spoke with directly, she appealed the decision after she was informed her Workout 1 score was rejected because she did not use the proper weight. After reviewing her appeal, the Rogue Invitational team decided to reinstate her score.
It is unclear why Rogue Fitness used 30kg as the standard when 29kg has been the common 65-pound conversion in previous online competitions, including the CrossFit Open. Especially when 65kg is equal to 66.1387 pounds whereas when athletes are using bumper plates in pounds, the barbell is still in kilograms…or at least the Rogue Fitness Bella Bar 2.0 (affiliate link) is.
And 15kg is only 33.0693 pounds. Adding 30 pounds of bumper plates makes the “65-pound” standard only 63.0693 pounds. Compare that to the 66.1387 pounds when using the 30kg conversion and the European athletes are at a 4.9% disadvantage.
The 29kg conversion, however, comes in at 63.9341 pounds and is much closer to the actual weight when using LB bumper plates.
So…the current standings are now as follows:
Men
1) Chandler Smith
2) Jorge Fernandez
3) Scott Tetlow
4) Jack Farlow
5) Tim Paulson
Women
1) Manon Angonese
2) Olivia Kerstetter
3) Andrea Solberg
4) Anikha Greer
5) Bailey Rogers
As you can see, the leaderboard has been all over the place. Many of the athletes who had scores missing this morning, they are now back in. The changes pushed Colten Mertens from 5th this morning down to 11th this afternoon. Jessi Smith, who was in 5th earlier, is now down to 10th overall.
It is unclear if the leaderboard is final yet, or if more changes are coming. Stay tuned to The Barbell Spin for more updates.
