This weekend Mexico erupted into chaos as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels, attacked various areas in western Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. The United States State Department urged U.S. citizens in Mexico to shelter in place as the CJNG burned vehicles and set up roadblocks.
All of this comes just over two months out from the World Fitness Project’s Tour Stop 1 in Mexico City, the first competition of 2026. While the threats have been contained in areas west of Mexico City, the U.S. State Department has categorized Mexico City as a Level 3 advisory…which means “Reconsider travel.”

And while a lot can change in two months, you are right. However, many are calling for the World Cup matches that are scheduled to be hosted in Mexico be moved due to security fears. The first match is on June 11 in Mexico City.
So far FIFA has given no indication on what they plan to do, if anything. The same is true for the WFP.
In a response asking about whether the WFP was working on a contingency plan, a representative from the WFP answered, “We are aware of the situation and are discussing contingency plans now as we continue to monitor the situation.”
Tour Stop 1 in Mexico City is scheduled for May 1-3. The online qualifier for Challengers is currently underway until Wednesday, February 25.
