The 40 women who take the floor at the 2024 CrossFit Games will have a much different look than the previous year in Madison. It’s common to see turnover in the sport as new athletes emerge each year, but 2024 could a bigger shift than previously seen.
Of the 40 women who competed at the 2023 CrossFit Games, 11 will not be making a run at the 2024 CrossFit Games as an individual. The reasons for those not pursuing an individual run at the Games this year ranges from athletes going team, injuries and several just elected to not compete.
To put into perspective the guaranteed turnover this year, there were 11 female rookies at the 2023 CrossFit Games. Now with that many open spots, could there be even more rookies in Fort Worth this year?
Here’s the list of women who are not competing as an individual this year:
- Emma Cary (did not register for the Open)
- Annie Thorisdottir (pregnant)
- Jamie Simmonds (team)
- Kelly (Baker) Shirley (did not register for the Open)
- Christine Kolenbrander (injury)
- Alexia Williams (injury)
- Matilde Garnes (team)
- Ella Wunger (team)
- Michelle Basnett (did not register for the Open)
- Shahad Budebs (did not register for the Open)
- Emily de Rooy (team)
Of course there are also plenty of veterans looking to return to the competition floor. Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr returns along with Haley Adams. And then you have athletes who failed to qualify last year looking to redeem themselves such as Brooke Wells, Jacqueline Dahlstrom and Freya Moosbrugger.
If you are wondering about the men’s field, there are only three men who won’t be competing as an individual this season. Noah Ohlsen and Chandler Smith are both going team. And then Jason Smith is serving a 4-year sanction for violating the drug policy.
