6 Major, 9 Minor Penalties Handed Out After 20.5 Video Review

CrossFit HQ has completed its review of 20.5 video submissions for the overall top 40 men and women. In total, 15 penalties were handed out, including 6 major penalties. The announcement marks the end of the new weekly top 40 review process this season.

This week’s penalties created serious implications for two athletes looking to qualify via the CrossFit Open. Giorgos Karavis and Christian Lucero both received major penalties and have fallen outside the Top 20 cut line. Both were sitting in a qualifying spot prior to the video review.

Major Penalties

  • Melina Rodriguez – Major penalty for lack of height on wall ball and lack of lockout in muscle-up.
  • Jimena Delamer – Major penalty for a false start and failure to perform 12 wall-ball shots.
  • Emelie Lundberg – Major penalty for consistent lack of lockout in muscle-up.
  • Logan Collins – Major penalty for consistent lack of lockout in muscle-up.
  • Giorgos Karavis – Major penalty for consistent lack of depth in wall ball.
  • Christian Lucero – Major penalty for consistent lack of height on wall ball.

Minor Penalties

Before the penalties were announced, Logan Collins and Christian Lucero took to social media arguing their case that they should not be penalized. Collins’ penalty dropped him down to the very last Top 20 qualifying spot. Lucero, however, dropped to 41st overall and outside a qualifying position. Karavis was also knocked out of the Top 20 due to his penalty.

While not as critical as Collins’ and Lucero’s penalties, Jeff Adler also received a penalty, albeit minor. It does, however, move him down from 2nd worldwide down to 5th overall. Adler will still qualify for his second CrossFit Games appearance.

The announcement marks the end of the video review process for the top 40 athletes in the world. Unless CrossFit reverses it decision following an appeal (both Collins and Lucero have appealed), the Top 20 qualifiers and National Champions inside the top 40 worldwide will have passed video review and will be going to the 2020 CrossFit Games.
