Alex Gazan, Jeff Adler Win First Workout of the ‘Golden Barbell’ Competition

If you tuned in to the CrossFit Games’ Instagram past this afternoon you might have seen Jeff Adler, Brent Fikowski, Alex Gazan and Alexis Raptis doing a workout. Your first thought might have been, “Is this 24.1?” The answer to that is no.

New this year, the athletes doing the Open Live Announcements will also be doing two additional workouts unrelated to the CrossFit Open as part of a “throwdown-style” competition to win a Rogue Fitness Golden Barbell.

The first workout this week was Nasty Girls, a 3-round triplet of 50 air squats, 7 ring muscle-ups and 10 hang power cleans (135/95 lbs). Hosted at CrossFit 580, just down the road from CrossFit Pleasanton (where the 24.1 Open announcement will be held), the four athletes threw down in front of a small in-person audience and fans watching via Instagram Live.

Alex Gazan would end up with the fastest time of all the athletes, finishing her last hang power clean in an unofficial 5:21. Jeff Adler was the next to finish in 5:23. Alexis Raptis then finished in 5:43 and Brent Fikowski wrapped it up in 6:15.

Interestingly, the ring height for the muscle-ups was set to what appeared to be 6-feet high. This left Fikowski having to do strict muscle-ups while Adler was able to do a minor kip. The women, however, could do a modified kipping muscle-up with bent legs at the bottom of the kip.

While we know the results of this first of three events for the Golden Barbell, we don’t have much more detail about this unofficial competition. The second and third event will be tomorrow with the third being the official 24.1 Open workout. However, how the competition is scored and has not been announced by CrossFit.
