Ben Smith has competed at the CrossFit Games every year since 2009. Smith is the only athlete to make 10 consecutive individual Games appearances. That streak, however, will come to an end next week…unless he is granted a wildcard invite.
Yesterday, Smith shared a video of him squat cleaning 330 pounds on Instagram. The caption read, “330 today. Starting to feel like myself again. I mean… I’d go throw down hard next week if the wildcard opportunity came up… What do y’all think? #Ben11 ?”
It is the first time Smith has publicly stated that he would accept the wildcard invite if offered. If Smith did receive one, it would be the second wildcard, or “blowhard” card as described by Greg Glassman. Hunter McIntyre received the first wildcard invite back in May.
Smith underwent minor knee surgery in January. Smith competed in the CrossFit Open, but was not competitive as he was still rehabbing his knee. He later attempted to earn an invite via the Sanctionals. Smith competed at the Rogue Invitational and the Granite Games, finishing 14th and 10th, respectively.
The start of the CrossFit Games is just 8 days away. Time is running out to grant Smith a wildcard. Stay tuned to The Barbell Spin for the latest breaking news.
