Within days of posting on social media that he would accept a wildcard invite to compete at the CrossFit Games, Ben Smith got what he wanted. This evening Smith shared with his fans on social media that he received an invite and will be making his 11th consecutive appearance at the 2019 CrossFit Games.
Smith began his push to get back to the CrossFit Games four days ago when he shared a video of him hang cleaning 330 pounds. In the caption Smith said, “I mean… I’d go throw down hard next week if the wildcard opportunity came up… What do y’all think? #Ben11 ?”
From there fans from all over the world began using the #Ben11 hashtag urging CrossFit to give out the second wildcard of the season. Since the original post, over 700 Instagram posts have featured the #Ben11 hashtag.
Smith joins Hunter McIntyre as the two wildcard invites to the CrossFit Games. McIntyre also used social media to help get noticed by CrossFit.
Smith failed to qualify for the CrossFit Games this year after undergoing knee surgery right before the start of the CrossFit Open this year. Smith did the Open workouts, but was not competitive.
Smith then attempted to earn an invite via Sanctionals by competing at the Rogue Invitational and Granite Games, but Smith fell short both times.
Smith will join the rest of the men’s individual athletes on Tuesday for the athlete dinner. Competition begins Thursday morning.
