Carla Cornejo Plascencia Fails Drug Test at North America West Semifinal

Carla Cornejo Plascencia failed an in-competition drug test at the North America West Semifinal last month. Cornejo Plascencia was a member of the 3rd place team, CrossFit Complex Wodex, and had qualified for the 2024 CrossFit Games. However, Cornejo Plascencia’s drug test contained 16a-hydroxy-1-methyl-5a-androst-1-en-3,17-dione and 3a-hydroxy-1-methylene-5a-androstan-17-one, metabolites of metenolone.

Metenolone, also referred to as methenolone, is an androgen and anabolic steroid and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, (WADA). While it does have use in the medical community, Metenolone is used in the bodybuilding community as a way to boost metabolism, thereby increasing fat burn while promoting muscle gain. It is also known as Primobolan.

Cornejo Plascencia has been on the CrossFit Complex Wodex team the past two season. Last year the team finished 14th in the North America West Semifinal. This year, the team finished third overall, well within the seven teams that were invited to compete at the CrossFit Games out of the region.

Cornejo Plascencia, the team captain, was joined by Sasha Nievas, Esteban Ospina and Ricardo García. Samuel Zaleme and Ana Sofía Armenta Cano were alternates on the team.

Cornejo Plascencia has filed an appeal. Rhino CrossFit Dawgs, 8th at the North America West Semifinal, has been invited to backfill their spot.
