Jack Monaghan finished in 6th place at the Torian Pro earlier this month. He was subsequently drug tested following the competition and his sample tested positive for a banned substance.
Monaghan’s sample included 3a-hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one, a metabolite of drostanolone.
Upon being notified of the failed drug test, Monaghan has appealed the finding.
3a-Hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one, also known as a metabolite of the anabolic steroid drostanolone, is a synthetic compound classified as a controlled substance due to its performance-enhancing effects. It is banned in sports by organizations like the World Anti-Doping Agency for its ability to increase muscle mass and strength.
Drostanolone was originally developed for medical purposes like treating breast cancer, it is now primarily associated with bodybuilding and athletics, though its use is banned by most sports organizations due to its performance-enhancing effects and potential health risks.
Phil Toon, Ilias Kuliev, Tyler Lee and Christiano Damasceno are athletes who tested positive for metabolites of drostanolone in recent years. All of these athletes received four-year sanctions from CrossFit.
It is unclear, at this time, what Monaghan is appealing – whether he is claiming a tainted supplement or if he is challenging the results of the test findings. CrossFit has lowered the four-year ban to two years in cases where an athlete has been able to prove a supplement was tainted.
Ivan Kukartsev was the last athlete to have his sanction reduced to two years after he was able to prove his supplement was tainted with GW501516 and LGD-4033 at last year’s Asia Semifinal.
Monaghan has competed in the CrossFit Open every year since 2022. Last year he qualified for his first Semifinal appearance where he placed 9th at Torian Pro. This year, as mentioned above, he took 6th place at the In-Person Qualifying Event in Australia.
