CrossFit has begun its search to find a new Medical Director for the CrossFit Games. The position is looking to backfill the role vacated by Dr. Michael Ray in October. The Games Medical Director will serve as the lead medical consultant for the CrossFit Games.
The contractor-based role has been posted on Lever, a recruitment and applicant tracking system platform used by CrossFit for open job postings.
According to the job description, the Medical Director will “independently design and direct medical strategies, coordinate medical staffing, and ensure compliance with applicable medical standards and regulations. The individual will operate as an independent contractor and retain full authority over all clinical and medical judgments.”
Responsibilities will also include collaboration with CrossFit Safety Advisory Board, coordinate with CrossFit’s Safety and Sport teams, direct medical coverage and readiness plan for the CrossFit Games, oversee on-site triage, treatment and emergency response systems and supervise all medical personnel at the Games.
Some of the main qualifications include:
- Active, unrestricted medical license (MD or DO) in California, or eligibility to obtain prior to the Games.
- Board-certified in a primary specialty such as Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, or Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.
- Board certification in Sports Medicine.
- Minimum of 7 years of clinical experience, with 3+ years in medical leadership or event operations.

Dr. Michael Ray has been the Medical Director of the CrossFit Games since the beginning. He founded CrossFit Flagstaff with his wife in 2006, was a member of the CrossFit training staff and a practicing emergency medicine physician.
In October, Greg Glassman shared that Dr. Ray had stepped down as the Medical Director.
