Emma Lawson is the latest athlete to announce she will not be competing in the 2025 CrossFit Games season. The reason, however, is not due to boycotting CrossFit. Instead, Lawson shared she is dealing with a “nagging” back injury and is taking the necessary time for her body to heal.
In the post on Instagram, Lawson said, “This would have been my 7th year signing up for the Open, but unfortunately a nagging injury is going to prevent me from being able to give it my best effort without putting the rest of my season at risk. I know the right decision for me is to take the time my body needs to heal.”
To qualify for the 2025 CrossFit Games, one of the requirements is that an athlete must finish in the top 1% in the CrossFit Open. With the Open just one week away, Lawson is going to focus on rehabbing and getting healthy for the remainder of the year.
With Lawson not participating in the CrossFit Open, it is unclear if she will compete at the Mayhem Classic the first weekend in April. As one of the In-Person Qualifying Events for the CrossFit Games, Lawson was one of 20 confirmed female athletes to compete at the Mayhem Classic. Now that she would not receive an invite to compete at the Games, it is likely we will not see Lawson in Cookeville on April 5-6.
Lawson will, however, look to get back on the competition floor in May. That’s when Tour Event 1 of the World Fitness Project begins. “I’ll be focused on getting my back healthy and preparing for the upcoming WFP season and a few other exciting events ahead!!” shared Lawson.
Tour Event 1 is May 9-11 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lawson is one of the 20 signed Pro card athletes competing.
Lawson’s last time on the competition floor was last month at TYR Wodapalooza. Lawson did withdraw from Reps Ahead, but did compete on a team with Danielle Brandon and Shelby Neal. The trio won the elite women’s team competition.
