If you were scanning the Team Quarterfinals leaderboard after Day 1, you might have noticed one team in Europe had not submitted any scores. CrossFit Fabriken Vasterbro A-Team sat in last place with no scores entered. After finishing 17th in the Europe region during the Open, it was unexpected to see them at the bottom of the leaderboard.
The reason was not because of a submission issue or technical difficulties. It was much more serious than that. Oscar Tyrberg, one of the team members, suffered cardiac arrest during the first team workout.
His teammates jumped into action and were able to resuscitate Oscar quickly thanks to CPR and a defibrillator on hand at the gym and was taken to the hospital for observation.
In an Instagram post this evening, Oscar wrote the following:
Yesterday didn’t really go as planned. During the first session of the quarterfinals in Crossfit I had a cardiac arrest. With the help of defibrillator and CPR the rest of the team made a brilliant effort and got me going in minutes. Now I feel as good as possible under the circumstances, but have to stand over burpees for a while 😅
If you’re going to have a cardiac arrest anywhere, it’s at @crossfitfabriken, it couldn’t have been handled better. Sad that the season is ending like this, but very happy for my teammates (and the rest of you who were there) who actually literally saved my life. Beat that team effort if you can! ❤️ 🩹
Above all, very happy that @filippa.ferm was there, handled everything stayed cool when it was at the toughest, best! ❤️
In speaking with Oscar, he said he did not experience any warning signs or have any previous issues prior to his cardiac arrest yesterday.
Cardiac arrest is a condition where the heart suddenly stops beating, leading to a lack of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. This can cause a person to become unresponsive, stop breathing, and eventually result in death if not treated promptly.
Tyrberg was on CrossFit Fabriken’s 2021 Semifinals team that finished 19th at the CrossFit German Throwdown. Last year he finished 92nd in the Europe Quarterfinals and this year he finished 1,312th worldwide as an individual in the Open. However, his primary goal this year was to compete alongside teammates in the team division.
