The 2024 Team Quarterfinals begins next week and it is the first chance to truly see which teams could be contending of the podium in Ft. Worth this August. During the Open, teams can have many more athletes on the official roster than the six-athlete limit beginning in Quarterfinals. Because of this, the team leaderboard during the Open can be a bit misleading.
With that in mind, we wanted to walk through the Team Quarterfinals format, how many qualify, how many advance to Semifinals and some of the top teams to keep an eye on.
WHO ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS?
The greater of [i] the top 25% of teams in each region or [ii] 50 teams in each region from the 2024 CrossFit Open advance to this year’s Quarterfinals. For example, the top 58 teams from Europe will be invited to compete in Quarterfinals. In Asia, though, the top 25% is only 19 teams; therefore, the top 50 teams from Asia will be invited to compete in Quarterfinals.
Here are the number of teams who will advance to Quarterfinals from each region:
Region | Teams Advancing to Quarterfinals |
Africa | 49 |
Asia | 50 |
Europe | 58 |
North America East | 84 |
North America West | 68 |
Oceania | 50 |
South America | 50 |
As you can see, Africa only had 49 teams register for the CrossFit. Because of that, all 49 teams can compete in Quarterfinals. The top 25% of teams in Asia, Oceania and South America were under the minimum 50 teams so each of those regions advance the top 50 teams regardless of their percentile rank.
And for Europe and the two North American regions, the top 25% of teams advance.
THE FORMAT
Teams can begin registering for the Team Quarterfinals on Monday, April 1, at 2:00pm PDT. During this registration process teams will need to declare their Competition Team roster. The team manager must select between 4-6 athletes who will compete during Quarterfinals. The team roster is locked at this time and only those athletes will be able to compete on the team for the remainder of the season.
To compete, teams must pay a $100 USD registration fee during the registration process.
Once the roster is set, Team Quarterfinals begins on Wednesday, April 3, and runs through Monday, April 8. There will be two competition windows in which teams must perform workouts and submit scores.
Window #1: Wednesday, April 3, at 12:00pm PDT through Saturday, April 6, at 5:00pm PDT.
Window #2: Saturday, April 6, at 5:00pm PDT through Monday, April 8, at 5:00pm PDT.
The number of workouts that will need to be performed within each window will be announced at the start of Quarterfinals.
WHO ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS?
The top 40 teams in each Quarterfinal region will be required to submit video of all their workouts when submitting their score. Upon completion of video review, the Team leaderboard will be finalized by no later than April 15.
Once finalized, the top 30 teams from each region will advance to Semifinals.
TEAMS TO WATCH
Pedro from Coffee, Pods & WODs highlighted some of the top teams to watch prior to the start of the season. In looking at the leaderboard, it appears his list is pretty spot on with maybe a few additional teams that could be in the mix.
Peak360 had the best score in the worldwide Open leaderboard for teams. With a 4th place and two 1st place worldwide finishes, Noah Ohlsen’s team looks primed for the season. However, the athletes whose scores were used include others outside their core athletes. Anikha Greer and Henrik Negard’s scores both contributed to their Open ranking.
The same is for CrossFit Zarautz Traincult where Fabian Beneito and Aniol Ekai, both of which are anticipated to go individual again this season, contributed to their team’s scores.
This seems to be the case for all of the top teams on the worldwide leaderboard. In fact, every team in the Top 20 on the worldwide leaderboard had more than the anticipated four core athletes contribute to their Open ranking. So, as mentioned earlier, Quarterfinals will be our first opportunity to truly see what each team will look like moving forward.
With that said, here are some of the highly anticipated top teams to keep an eye out for next week…
