If you follow Alexis Johnson on Instagram you might have noticed late last week that the two-time CrossFit Games veteran is in a medical walking boot. Johnson was diagnosed with a severe stress reaction in her foot.
Johnson sprained her ankle last month, but shook off the pain in order continue competing in The Fittest Experience Online Qualifier. She would go on to win the online qualifier, but the pain did not subside. An MRI showed that Johnson has a severe stress reaction in her navicular bone on her left foot.
The photo below shows the MRI image of Johnson’s foot. According to Johnson, the area circled in blue is the usual color of bone on an MRI. The pink arrow points to her navicular bone that causing pain.
Doctors were concerned that it could develop into a stress fracture and prescribed Johnson a medical walking boot. She will be in the boot for the next few weeks. A stress reaction is generally a precursor to a stress fracture. At the stress reaction stage, the bone is breaking down and becoming weak, but does not contain a break.
When talking about the 2018 CrossFit Games season, Johnson said, “I’m going to err on the side of caution. I’d rather be healthy going into next season!”
As for the 2018 season, Johnson may be joining fellow Misfit Athletics teammates Travis Williams and Jordan Cook to compete in the team competition. No final decision has been made yet, but keep an eye out for the Misfit crew in Houston.
