SBD Apparel is releasing its new leather weightlifting wrist wraps later today. The originality of the design, however, is being called into question by Onyx Weightlifting Co.
Hours after SBD Apparel shared that it would be releasing new products, Onyx’s founder, Danny Ear, jumped on Instagram and said that SBD Apparel was ripping off their design.
Danny says that SBD Apparel took their original designs and did not change anything for their version. He then adds that SBD has been deleting comments on Instagram when someone says they copied Onyx.
Danny then goes on to say that Onyx is a small business and when they designed the weightlifting wraps years ago they did not have the money to pay for patents. And because they didn’t patent the design within the first year, “you’re kind of screwed,” Danny said.
On top of that he says they would have also needed to file for an international patent, which Onyx did not.
Here’s a look at the Onyx wraps followed by the new SBD version…

What do you think? Are the SBD wraps the same as Onyx? Should SBD have copied the design despite Onyx not holding a patent?
