Sheila Barden Has Herniated L5/S1 Disc

Sheila Barden just wrapped up competing on Team Don’t Stop at the 2018 CrossFit Games. Barden and her team finished 6th overall after a dominated 1st place finish in the South Regional. But now we might have some indication of why Team Don’t Stop struggled a bit at the Games, Barden was dealing with a 10-milimeter herniated disc.

Barden shared the news on Instagram and would provide further updates in the future. But for now, we know the herniation is at the L5/S1 and has bilateral S1 nerve root compression. Because of this, Barden has been walking around with shooting pain down both legs.

Barden is coming off a season where she had shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum. Barden made a quick recovery and helped Travis Williams, Jordan Cook and Rachel Garibay win the Open in the South Central Region and take 1st at the South Regional.

This injury could mean another difficult offseason rehabbing a surgery. More than likely this means Barden will have to sit out the 2019 CrossFit Games season. Stay tuned to The Barbell Spin as this story develops.
