Heading into today, the penultimate day, Chiara Silva, Veronika Voriskova and Ema Gálová were tied on points on the female leaderboard and on the male side Matus Kocar held a one point lead over Andrei Petku. Plenty to play for on the longest day of competition.
First up was a pre-dawn boat trip 750m off the coast of Mallorca where the athletes dove in and raced back to shore. Rafael Candeias came ashore first, beating Kocar and Petku to take the win. Voriskova continued her push towards the top of the leaderboard, having been a point behind the lead on day one and level yesterday, emerging from the Mediterranean ahead of Gálová and Maria Jose. “This was the event I was most nervous for as it hasn’t really been done before, but it turned out to be an epic event and the athletes finished on a high,” Singleton said.
Once the athletes got dried off they didn’t have far to travel for their next event. Taking place a stone’s throw from the beach was, as it turned out, a stone throw. Large rocks of similar sizes from the island were picked out and given to the athletes, furthest throw wins, simple. Gálová threw the farthest for the girls with Jose in second and Silva and Voriskova tied for third.
Next up was Event 8 and a return to C23 for an interval style 3’on/1’off with some pistol squats and GHD’s as a barrier before the scored section: max distance handstand walk. It turned out to be incredibly hard fought. Kocar and Rafael Candeias tied for first on 150m with Amato Mazzoccas coming in ahead of Petku by one metre. On the female end Voriskova kept up her charge with another event win ahead of Chiara Silva with Maria Jose in third.
The final event for the day was a double header 1-10 of power clean and power jerk with a 1RM snatch in the remaining time, live on YouTube on The Progrm’s channel. Maria Jose completed the double taking a first in both segments, tying with Voriskova on the snatch, who was making up some ground having finished last in the first piece. Ema Gálová held steady with a second and a third place finish and Silva finished with a 3rd and a 4th, respectively.
Mazzoccas and Kocar decided to share the spoils by swapping firsts and seconds in the final two events. Amato won the clean and jerks and came second in the snatch with Matus doing the opposite. Rafael and his twin brother Rodrigo took 4th and 5th in both events respectively and Petku took a third in Event 9 and shared second with Mazzoccas in the snatch.
Kocar finishes the day on 72 points, 11 ahead of Petku, who needs something of a resurrection tomorrow. Mazzoccas and Rafael are on 52 and 51 respectively with Rodrigo on 24 points in 5th place.
Veronika Voriskova has built a small lead on 66 points ahead of Maria Jose on 61 with Gálová one point behind Jose. Silva sits in 4th on 54 points.
Tomorrow, the final day, has two events awaiting the athletes. First up is a sprint with some turns. The competition will close out with a final event in C23 and it’s a monster.
