Matus Kocar & Chiara Silva in 1st Place After Day 1 at The Crown

Day one of The Crown has come to a close. We were promised that the athletes would make use of what the island has to offer and we weren’t left disappointed.

Event 1 consisted of a mountain bike race of just under 3,000m in distance, up to a 206m elevation. Slovakia’s Fittest Man, Matus Kocar, won the event with a time of 14:48 ahead of Rafael Candeias. Ema Gálová pipped Veronika Voriskova by 7 seconds to win for the girls.

Event 2 was the first of a mini-series of tests that competition founder and programmer, John Singleton, has dotted across the weekend, a max handstand hold. For the guys Andrei Petku took top spot, holding his handstand for 72 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of another second placed finish for Rafael Candeias. On the female side Voriskova took first place with a 63 second hold, beating Chiara Silva’s 52 second hold.

For Event 3, athletes made their way to C23 for a gymnastics focused test.

Push Pull consisted of
For Time:
100m ski, 10 C2B, 10 HSPU;
200m ski, 20 C2B, 20 HSPU;
300/30/30;
400/40/40

Silva went one better than her second place finish in the handstand hold and took the W with a time of 11:45 with Maria Jose finishing second in 11:59. Matus Kocar obliterated the men’s side, winning with a time of 9:28, beating Amato Mazzoccas’ into second with a time of 10:27.

The end of day one has Chiara Silva topping the female leaderboard with Veronika Voriskova one point behind in second. Unfortunately, Lily Deroulede was unable to travel so the female field is down to 4 for the weekend.

Matus Kocar is leading the guys, thanks to two event wins, with a 5 point lead over Andrei Petku.

Current Standings:

Male
1. Matus Kocar (22 pts)
2. Andrei Petku (17)
3. Rafael Candeias (16)
4. Amato Mazzocca (15)
5. Rodrigo Candeias (5)

Female
1. Chiara Silva (20 pts)
2. Vernokia Voriskova (19)
3. Ema Galova (16)
4. Maria Jose Vargas (15)

With only 25% of the events completed, there’s still plenty to play for.

Tomorrow, athletes will hit the beach for Event 4, Sand: a sand bag carry for time.
Later in the day they’ll take on the second mini series event with 200 drag rope double-unders for time.
