Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr and James Newbury took to the HYROX competition floor again this past weekend. Just a couple months after their debut in Melbourne, the duo hit HYROX Brisbane in the Mixed Doubles division. Toomey-Orr and Newbury improved on their time and crossed the finish line in 54:11.
The 54-minute time was 1:37 faster than their first competition in Melbourne. It was also good for 2nd place overall, behind none other than the team of Hunter McIntyre and Joanna Wietrzyk who finished in 51:20.
Tia and James’ time is one of the top 20 fastest Mixed Doubles times ever. Many of those faster than them are HYROX elite athletes who partnered up for a competition like James Kelly and Lauren Weeks or Megan Jacoby and Ryan Kent.
As for where Tia and James improved, you can see the comparison between their first race (Melbourne) and this past weekend (Brisbane).
What’s interesting is their run time is the exact same between the two competitions. They saved the most time in the Roxzone, the transition area between the running track and the stations. Some of this could be because they were more efficient getting on and off the track. However, the Roxzone is not always consistent between events and the Brisbane Roxzone could have been set up better.
Outside of the Roxzone it appears the duo made up most of their time on the 1k Ski and 50m Sled Pull.
Tia and James had already qualified for the 2025 HYROX World Championships in Chicago this June. While unconfirmed, it does appear they are planning to compete.
There were plenty of other CrossFit athletes in attendance this weekend. Ricky Garard completed his second HYROX race. Back in August 2023 Garard finished in 1:02:21. This weekend he crossed the finish line in 1:00:42, good for 6th in the Pro division. Hunter McIntyre won in 55:33.
Jay Crouch and Maddie Sturt also competed in the Mixed Doubles division. They finished in 10th with a time of 57:00. Their time in December was 59:36.Â
Jessica Coughlan, 2017 CrossFit Games veteran, took 11th in the Pro division with a time of 1:10:39. She also competed in the Mixed Doubles division with Robert Downton. They finished in 1:03:42.
Ben Garard and Gemma Hauck took 29th in Mixed Doubles with a time of 1:00:14. Bayley Martin and Marnie Sykes crossed the line in 1:02:27, good for 48th place.
There were a lot of CrossFit athletes in attendance so I’m sure I missed a few. You can visit the leaderboard here.
And if you are curious about whether Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr did 25.1 of the CrossFit Open, it appears she and Shane did it Monday morning from their garage gym in Australia.
But…on the Games leaderboard Tia has a score of 229 reps with the workout completed at CrossFit PRVN and judged by Kiefer Lammi. Not sure what’s going on, but Tia has not been in the States for a while.
