The CrossFit Athlete Council (aka the CAC) met on June 11 to discuss various topics ranging from athlete sanctions, the online public review process and potential changes to the 2027 CrossFit Games season.
That last topic, the 2027 CrossFit Games season structure, gave an insight into what might be changing next year…
Online Competition
With the penalties that always come out of an online competition, CrossFit and the CAC discussed the long-term strategy of online stages and their role in the qualification for the CrossFit Games.
According to the CAC meeting notes, “The general consensus was that in-person competition is favored, but there was also recognition that the need for an online option remains.”
One and Done
After two years of allowing athletes to compete at multiple in-person Semifinals, this year had some saying that it would be better if athletes could only compete at one in-person Semifinal during the season.
Regionality
Paired with the discussion around how many times an athlete could compete in the Semifinals stage, the concept of “regionality” was also brought to the table.
Regionality refers to previous years where there were regions that dictated which Regional an athlete competed at from 2011 to 2018. And then in more recent years, athletes were placed into the Semifinal based on their citizenship (or current address in the United States).
While both topics were discussed, no final decisions were made during the meeting on June 11.
Feedback
CrossFit also told the CAC that they are “actively collecting feedback from all stakeholders, including event organizers and athletes, to shape the 2027 season.”
No further information was disclosed in the meeting notes.
2027 CrossFit Open
And finally, CAC members were invited to attend focus groups to provide input on the 2027 CrossFit Open. It is unclear what input CrossFit was looking for. However, I have heard rumblings that the dates of the 2027 CrossFit Open could move up earlier in the year.
