A major shakeup took place this morning within CrossFit. After news broke this morning on The Sevan Podcast, CrossFit has confirmed that approximately 20% of CrossFit’s workforce has been laid off. While an exact number of employees laid off was not provided by CrossFit, sources have told The Barbell Spin that over 20 employees have been affected in today’s cuts.
Following the layoffs, CrossFit provided some context around the layoffs via an email sent to affiliates.
Letter sent to affiliates:
I’m reaching out today to share some news about difficult changes we’re making at CrossFit HQ. While these changes won’t impact you day to day, we wanted you to hear the news from us directly.
Over the past few months, we have been working on how to set up CrossFit to execute most effectively against the 2030 vision that we shared earlier this year: to reach 30 million people while building strong affiliates and coaches. In assessing our organization and cost structure, while considering the current economic environment, it became clear that we needed to make some changes.
Unfortunately, the outcome of that assessment led us to reduce the size of our team by about 20%, a decision we did not come to lightly. These talented members of our team have contributed so much to CrossFit, and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
While this was a hard decision, these reductions will help us create a more sustainable business model, make sure we’re prepared for the current economic uncertainty, and position us to make some big bets against our most important priorities in the future.
I want to assure you that CrossFit is financially healthy and that we’ll continue to work hard to support you and the rest of our community. Q1 showed growth and momentum for CrossFit, with progress in driving new members, great affiliate growth and retention, and a successful CrossFit Open. Building strong affiliates remains a top priority for us in 2023, so expect to see more from us on this front.
As always, we are here to support you and remain grateful for your partnership.
Thank you,
Don
In speaking with a representative from CrossFit, the move was a fully strategic decision and was not driven by balance sheets or rumored economic difficulties. Additionally, CrossFit told The Barbell Spin that the layoffs will not have an effect on the relationships or commitments to affiliates or partners, nor on the upcoming Semifinals or 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games.
