Emma Lawson Joins Brute

Last fall Emma Lawson’s coach, Josh Woolley, stepped away from coaching. Woolley ran Mammoth Training Methods and coached Lawson and Jack Farlow during their rise to the top of the sport. But in the months following Woolley’s departure, Lawson had not publicly begun working with another coach.

Then last week Lawson was spotted down in Jacksonville, Florida, hanging with Fee Saghafi and the Brute crew. Many speculated Lawson was joining the Brute training camp.

This morning those speculations proved true. In a video on Instagram, Lawson asked ChatGTP, “What training camp will be most beneficial for my future in CrossFit?” to which ChatGTP responded, “BRUTE.”

So apparently Lawson took that advice and is joining Matt Torres and the rest of the BRUTE camp.

Last month Lawson announced that she would sit out the CrossFit Open, the first time since 2019 when she was 14 years old. Lawson later shared that she has a bulging disk. She also withdrew from the Mayhem Classic as she would be unable to qualify for the CrossFit Games because she did not compete (or finish in the top 1%) in the CrossFit Open.

However, Lawson does hope to be back on the competition floor this May for Tour Event 1 of the new World Fitness Project.

Outside of ChatGTP’s recommendation, Torres’ history of helping young athletes navigate their way back from a back injury likely played a role in Lawson’s decision.

Emma Cary sat out the 2022 CrossFit Games season with a back injury. Torres worked with Cary through her rehabilitation that year and was able to get her back on the competition floor in 2023 where she would go on to finish 8th at the CrossFit Games.

BRUTE’s athlete roster now includes James Sprague, Dallin Pepper and Jayson Hopper, Fee Saghafi, Danielle Brandon (kinda) and now Emma Lawson.
