The first off-season competition following the CrossFit Games wrapped up this weekend. The 2023 Madrid Championship is the largest competition in the world with 20 divisions, including elite men, women and teams. The elite divisions feature numerous CrossFit Games veterans and even more Semifinals athletes.
On the men’s side, Lazar Djukic won against a field featuring Jonne Koski, Travis Mayer, and Lazar’s brother Luka among others. Lazar won two events, the Max Clean & Jerk event and the 5k run, on his way to a second consecutive title at the Madrid Championship.
Koski, coming off his best finish at the CrossFit Games, took 2nd, just 10 points ahead of Travis Mayer who is returning to competition after sitting out the 2023 Games season with a wrist injury. Luka Djukic narrowly missed the podium, taking 4th place overall.
For the women, Karin Freyova looked in control throughout the weekend. Coming off a 14th place finish, Freyova finished with four event wins during the seven scored events on her way to a 100-point victory over second place finished Anikha Greer. Emelie Lundberg rounded out the podium in 3rd place.
Elena Carratala Sanahuja missed the podium by two points and would have made the podium, but the jump bar double-unders caused the Games veteran to not record a clean and jerk. Sanahuja took 31st in the event and was unable to claw her way back onto the podium.
For their wins, Djukic and Freyova each earned €30,000. Second place took home €15,000 and 3rd place walked away with €6,000.
In the elite team division, Los Niños ran away with the victory. The team, made up of Noah Ohlsen, Chandler Smith, Sydney Michalyshen and Lena Richter, won four scored events and never finished worse than 3rd in any single event. The team earned €20,000 for standing atop the podium.
