Dave Castro was brought back right before last year’s CrossFit Games to lead the Sport Team. With less than two months until the Games, Castro said he provided input to the programming that Adrian Bozman had already created. But with a full year under his belt Castro is back in the saddle with respect to programming.
In his interview with James Sprague, Castro shared more insight into how he and Bozman are working together to program the 2024 CrossFit Games. “This year early on I said ‘hey, I’m feeling it, I’m excited, I got it’. He understood the space I need and he kinda gave me the space. For the individual side, I just ran with it,” shared Castro.
He continued by saying he told Bozman to help with the team programming, “The best support for this year that you [Bozman] can give the team and me is focus on the team stuff. So he really leaned into the team side and the individual aspect, I’m all in.”
Castro added that he and Bozman have bounced ideas off each other for this year. He then said it won’t be this way every year, but this year he wanted to get back into programming.

History of CrossFit Games Programming
Dave Castro programmed every CrossFit Games from 2007 through 2021 before being let go in January 2022. Castro was rehired just five months later, but was not brought back to lead the Sport Team. Thus, Adrian Bozman took the reins with respect to programming the CrossFit Games in 2022 and 2023.
Castro was then reinserted to lead the Sport Team following Justin Bergh’s departure ahead of the 2023 CrossFit Games. Castro provided input to the programming in 2023 and now is back at the helm when it comes to the individual programming for the 2024 CrossFit Games.
Many have commented that the programming this year feels like it did 6-7 years ago, which makes sense given Castro’s style of creating tests for the athletes. So with Castro returning to leading the programming, how will it compare to what we have seen over the past two seasons?
