Lazar Djukic Drowns During Event 1 of the 2024 CrossFit Games

This morning Lazar Djukic drowned during the swim portion of Event 1, Lake Day, at the 2024 CrossFit Games. The event was a 3.5 mile run followed by a half-mile swim across Marine Creek Lake.

Djukic, a four-time CrossFit Games veteran, was near the front of the pack and just shy of the boat ramp to exit the water before tragedy struck.

There are reports that spectators expressed concern about an athlete struggling in the water and a spectator entered the water in an attempt to help. But once all athletes crossed the finish line, Djukic was missing.

A search then ensued with boats and divers entering the water to locate Djukic. At 10am local time, first responders recovered Djukic’s body from the lake. Lazar’s brother, Luka Djukic, was also competing at this year’s Games.

CrossFit, LLC, has cancelled the remainder of the events on Thursday along with Vendor Village and associated activities. CrossFit has not communicated any plans for how it will proceed with the remainder of the competition.
